How We Stay on Top of Recent Technology

Clients ask me some version of this question all the time, usually phrased as a compliment: "How do you keep up with all of it?" The technology landscape moves fast, a new tool or threat seems to surface every week, and the honest assumption behind the question is that staying current must require some special gift — a knack, a natural-born early-adopter wiring. I want to take that assumption apart, because it is wrong in a way that actually matters to the businesses I look after.

Staying on top of technology is not a personality trait. It is a system. It is a set of boring, repeatable habits that anyone disciplined enough can run, and the reason it looks like a gift from the outside is only that most people never build the system. Here is the one I actually run at BVTech, in plain terms.

The daily intake: a small number of trustworthy feeds

The first mistake people make is trying to drink from the whole firehose — every tech blog, every breathless headline, every vendor email. That is a recipe for noise and burnout, not currency. The trick is the opposite: a small number of high-signal sources, read every single day, until reading them is as automatic as checking the weather.

For security — which is where staying current is least optional — the anchor of my day is the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog. It is the U.S. government's curated list of software flaws confirmed to be exploited by real attackers right now. It is not a list of every scary-sounding bug; it is the short list of things actually being used in the wild. When something lands on it, the theoretical debate is over. Reading it daily means I know, within hours, which of my clients' systems — or their vendors' systems — just became urgent. Around that anchor sit a handful of vendor advisories (Microsoft, the firewall makers we deploy, the browsers) and a small, trusted set of independent researchers. That is it. Maybe twenty minutes, every morning, before most of my clients have finished their coffee.

The discipline is in the smallness. A focused feed read every day beats an exhaustive feed read occasionally, every time. Consistency is the whole game.

The lab: nothing reaches a client untested

The second habit is where a lot of well-meaning technical people go wrong. They read about a new tool, get excited, and deploy it straight into a live business because it is shiny. I have a hard rule against this, and it is the rule that lets me move quickly without being reckless: nothing new touches a client environment until it has been proven in my own lab first.

When a new tool, a new security product, or a new version of something we rely on shows up, it goes onto my own systems — my own network, my own test machines, my own data — before it goes anywhere near a paying client. I get to find the rough edges, the awkward defaults, the way it breaks under a real workload, on my own time and at my own risk. By the time I recommend something to a Texas business, I have already lived with it. That is the difference between being current and being a guinea-pig vendor for your own clients. The lab is what makes "fast" and "safe" stop being opposites.

The filter: telling a real shift from a loud one

Here is the part that takes judgment, and it is the part two decades in the field actually buys you. Most of what gets announced as revolutionary is not. A smaller amount genuinely changes how the work is done. The skill that matters is not reading fast — it is the filter that separates the two, so you adopt the real shifts early and let the hype pass by without spending a client's money chasing it.

The clearest example right now is AI. There is an enormous amount of noise — every product on earth has bolted "AI" onto its name — and underneath that noise there are a few genuine, durable changes worth taking seriously. I deploy AI tools for clients where they solve a concrete problem: drafting, summarizing, automating a tedious workflow. I am also watching the other side of it carefully, because the same year that AI became useful business plumbing is the year that AI infrastructure became something attackers go after. The filter I apply to every new tool, AI or otherwise, is three questions: What real problem does this solve for a specific client? What does it cost in maintenance and attack surface to add it? And has it been proven, not just promised? A tool has to clear all three before it earns a place in anyone's business. Novelty is not a reason. Usefulness and safety are.

Learning in public, on purpose

The fourth habit is the one you are reading right now. I write. The weekly cybersecurity reports over at BVTech.org, the guides, these articles — they are not only marketing. Writing something down forces a level of understanding that passive reading never does. If I cannot explain a new vulnerability or a new tool plainly enough for a business owner to act on it, I do not actually understand it yet, and the writing is how I find that out. Teaching is the most honest test of whether you have really learned something.

It is also why I keep building the BVTech Academy and the Cyber Range — structured ways to turn what I am learning into something other people can use. The act of making knowledge teachable is, conveniently, the same act that makes it stick.

And then: the formal work

Underneath the daily habits sits the slower, formal layer. I am most of the way through a Bachelor of Applied Technology in Cloud Computing, carrying a 4.0, precisely because the daily-feed approach keeps you current on the surface but the degree work keeps you current on the foundations — the why beneath the what. Certifications do the same in a narrower way: AWS, the password-management and security credentials, the ethical-hacker-level training. None of these is the finish line. They are checkpoints that force me to go deep on something I would otherwise only skim.

Why this matters to you, not just to me

I am laying all this out because it is, in the end, what you are actually buying when you hire a managed IT provider. You are not buying a person who happens to be naturally good with computers. You are buying a system for staying current — someone whose daily job is to watch the feeds, test the tools, filter the hype, and translate all of it into decisions about your business, so that you can spend your attention on running your business instead. The three-day patch deadline that is a fire drill for an unprepared shop is a routine Tuesday for someone who reads the KEV catalog every morning.
