Why I Built the BVTech Academy: Free, Gamified IT and Cybersecurity Training for Adults
When people ask what I do, the short answer is that I run an IT and audiovisual firm in San Antonio. The longer answer includes something that surprises them: I also build and operate a free, gamified school for IT and cybersecurity, called the BVTech Academy. This article explains why a working managed-services provider would invest the time to build a learning platform, what the Academy actually contains, and who it is for.
Why a working MSP built a school
The honest origin is frustration. Over two decades in this field, I have watched a great deal of security and IT education fail the people who need it most. Certification mills optimize for passing an exam rather than for competence in front of a live console. Free resources are scattered, inconsistent, and frequently out of date. And the genuinely good training is often priced well beyond the reach of the career-changer, the homelabber, or the small-shop technician who is trying to grow.
I have always believed that the discipline I learned the hard way — documentation first, verify before you trust, finish the wiring before you call it done — can be taught, provided the learner is given real work to do rather than a slideshow to watch. The Academy is my attempt to encode that conviction into a platform that anyone can use without paying a cent.
What the Academy contains
The BVTech Academy is organized around six structured learning tracks, supported by a deep library of practical material. As of this writing it includes:
- 129 in-depth lessons across the six tracks, written to be read and applied rather than skimmed.
- 26 coding labs that ask the learner to write and run real code, not to answer multiple-choice questions about it.
- 11 capture-the-flag challenges in a live Cyber Range, where the objective is to solve a genuine security problem under realistic conditions.
- Server-graded examinations and hands-on capstones, so that completion reflects demonstrated skill rather than attendance.
- Public leaderboards and a moderated community for adult learners who want accountability and peers.
Everything is free, and I intend to keep it that way. The platform is built and maintained in Texas, and it carries the same standard I hold my client work to: if a lesson cannot survive contact with a real terminal, it does not belong in the curriculum.
Who it is for
The Academy was designed for adult learners with a serious intent to improve: the MSP owner who wants to sharpen a specific skill, the IT professional moving toward security, the cloud and infrastructure practitioner, the homelab enthusiast, and the genuinely curious newcomer who is willing to do the work. It is not a substitute for hands-on field experience — nothing is — but it is an honest on-ramp and a place to keep current.
How it connects to the work I do
The Academy and BVTech LLC share a single philosophy. The firm builds and secures real environments for Texas businesses; the Academy teaches the principles behind that work to anyone willing to learn them. Teaching a subject is also the most reliable way to remain expert in it, which means the Academy directly benefits the clients who rely on me. The curriculum and my fieldwork inform one another continuously.
If you are curious, the best thing to do is begin. Create a free account, choose a track, and complete the first lesson and its lab. You will know within an hour whether this is the kind of learning that suits you.
